Wetlands on the plateau - paradise of wild creatures

As one of three main ecosystems on the earth, wetland is known for its multifunction and biodiversity. Wetland not only provides a vital environment of the human being, but also breeds many waterfowls and plants.

Apart from the Lhalu Wetland State Nature Reserve located in the southwest of Lhasa, capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), there are altogether 19 municipal-level wetland nature reserves distributed in Lhasa's six counties, covering approximately 200 hectares.

The 12.2 square-kilometer Lhalu Wetland is known as the 'lung of Lhasa', listed as a state nature reserve early in 2005. Its favorable weather condition and abundant resource of plants have become an habitat with irresistible attraction to many rare species under state protection such as the black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis), Lammergier (Gypaetus barbatus Linnaeus), Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), etc.

The Wetland Nature Reserve in the eastern Dungxung County is the largest wetland nature reserve of all the 19 municipal-level ones in Lhasa. Established in 2002 covering 125 square kilometers, it features a typical high-attitude meadow with the average elevation of 4350 meters.

Lhuunzhub County, 65 km away to the north of downtown Lhasa, is famous for its natural beauty and splendid scenery. There are 3 municipal-level wetland nature reserves in the county with thousands of birds in various kinds dwell here for winter.

Other wetland nature reserves are located in Maizhokunnggar, Dagzze, Nyeemo and Chuishui respectively.

Wetland is not only vital for the wildlife, but also it is indispensable for the the local inhabitants on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Baker is a common plant that is used to control the desertification on the plateau.

During winter time, mergansers can be found swimming in Lhasa River and Lhasalu Wetland.
